PRESS RELEASE
POLICE URGED TO EXPEDITE INVESTIGATION INTO ACTIVIST ATTACK
The Zanzibar Female Lawyers Association (ZAFELA) and the Tanzania Media Women’s
Association Zanzibar (TAMWA ZNZ) are calling on the police force to expedite the
investigation into the attack on activist Amina Yusuf Ramadhan, which occurred on Thursday
night, May 23, 2024, at her home in Fuoni Mambosasa, West District “B” Unguja.
According to the victim, two masked men broke into her home, stealing a 53-inch TV, DVD
player, iron, laptop, and various documents, with the total value estimated at 2.2 million
Tanzanian shillings.
Additionally, the assailants inflicted severe injuries on Ms. Amina, causing her pain and creating
a substantial fear that has affected her ability to continue with her daily life. The incident was
reported at the Fuoni Police Station under reference number Fuo R/B 968/2024: Fuo IR 45/202425/05/2024.
ZAFELA and TAMWA ZNZ are saddened by this incident and condemn the attack on Ms.
Amina, who has made significant contributions to the fight against abuse.
“We are concerned that such incidents may discourage other activists from continuing their
work, including Ms. Amina herself, thereby hindering the efforts to combat abuse and violence
in the country.”TAMWA ZNZ and ZAFELA urge the police to expedite the investigation, as they are the only
body/organization mandated to do so, and to keep the public informed to ensure that those
responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.
Furthermore, we call on the legal authorities to take such incidents seriously, as activists,
citizens, and all individuals have the right to protection and security for themselves and their
property.
“It is crucial to work efficiently to ensure that criminals are held accountable for their actions.
This builds public trust in the legal system and helps to create social justice without
discrimination or favoritism.”
ZAFELA and TAMWA ZNZ believe that the police force has the capability to control violence
and attacks against women and other groups in Zanzibar, and we are ready to provide support
whenever needed.
