TAMWA is a national level Non-Governmental Organization known as Tanzania Media Women’s Association formed in 1987. TAMWA Zanzibar became fully self-governing and operational in both Isles of Unguja and Pemba since 2004. In January 2007, it attained its own separate registration.

  1. Introduction

Tanzania Media Women’s Association is a national level Non-Governmental formed in 1987 dedicated to promote the rights of women and children. TAMWA Zanzibar became fully fledged office in Unguja and Pemba since 2004 and registered in 2007. For years, the organization has worked with other media based organizations to support media friendly environment. Recently, the media organizations formed Media Legal Review Committee to particularly review the media related laws in the country in comparison with the regional media framework and best practices. TAMWA Zanzibar is currently under the implementation of two years project known as “Advocate for the Review of Freedom of Expression Laws” (ARFEL). The project is implemented by TAMWA-ZNZ supported by the Commonwealth Foundation aiming at advocating for the enactment of the media-friendly law in order to advance the freedom of the press”. The project is expected to analyze at least 12 media related laws to provide the bigger picture of the legal framework and shared across 30 media houses and produce more than 200 articles. Therefore, it will reach at least 8,000 people including government officials the aims to develop a strategic advocacy plan for advancing the enactment of a new media law in Zanzibar.

  1. Scope of the work

TAMWA Zanzibar currently seeks the skilled, committed and experienced individual’s journalists to work as a mentor specialized in media professional and Lawyer who will work closely with trained journalists through provision of guidance, technical media analytical skills and direction towards facilitating strong media advocacy and media coverage on freedom of expression through their stories, programs and articles before being published through various media platforms.

  1. EXPECTED OUTPUT

At the end of the mentorship process, the journalists are expected to:

  • Produce and publish analytical stories, articles and programs related to freedom of expression based.
  • Produce impact-based stories, articles and programs that will bring changes on freedom of expression.
  • Build networking with other media stakeholders for the sake of having a strong media advocacy platform to boost the enactment of the media friendly law in Zanzibar.
  1. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MENTOR AND TIME LINE

Mentor will specifically perform the following tasks;

4.1: Support Journalists in developing their operation plan based on the targeted stories.

4.2: Use developed messages based on media analysis to increase media advocacy.

4.3: Support the Journalists engagement and make sure they perform accordingly in promoting freedom of expression through media advocacy.

4.4: Use participatory methods during the mentoring and give the Journalists more time for experience sharing.

4.5: Work closely with TAMWA – ZNZ responsible officers for better performance of the assignment

4.6: Review and comments on Journalists prepared stories/ articles / programs.

4.7: Prepare and submit the mentoring report and share with TAMWA ZNZ for recommendations.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent will have to possess:

  • University degree (at least degree level and above) in Mass Communication, Journalism, Law Policy Analysis, or equivalent.
  • Understanding the media bill and the status.
  • Expertise in journalism and related fields.
  • Have good understanding of journalism landscape in Zanzibar.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with TAMWA’s programming and processes.
  • Ability to work with teams.
  • Excellent communications and writing skills in English.
  • Good presentation skills.
  1. EXPERIENCE
  • Mentor should have not less than five years of experience in media advocacy, Law, Management, Organization Development as well conversant with the Zanzibar social context and its dynamics. Multidiscipline experience within development organizations and NGOs is highly desirous.
  1. Time Frame

The work will be undertaken for an overall period of four months (from 13th January to 29th March, 2025).
