JUDGES FOR REVIEWING PERFORMANCE OF MEDIA HOUSES ON GENDER EQUITY AND JOURNALISTS INCLUDING YOUNG MEDIA FELLOWS ON GENDER ANALYTICAL AND IMPACT BASED STORIES RELATED TO WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP, GENDER EQUALITY AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN POLITICS (VAWP)

1.0 INTRODUCTION ANDBACKGROUND

Tanzania Media Women’s Association is a national level Non-Governmental formed in 1987 dedicated to promote the rights of women and children. TAMWA- Zanzibar became fully fledged office in Unguja and Pemba since 2004 and registered in 2007.

TAMWA – ZNZ is currently implementing the phase II project titled “Strengthen Women in Leadership (SWIL)” aimed at increasing participation of women in democratic processes and leadership at all levels of the society so that women will be regarded as active and vibrant actors in leadership processes. The project is undertaken in all eleven districts of Zanzibar, seven districts in Unguja and four districts in Pemba. The project is in partnership between TAMWA Zanzibar, JUWAUZA and PEGAO in Pemba with the support from Royal Norwegian Embassy. SWIL is seconded with AWLCA through young journalists engaged to create impactful stories that drive awareness, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the role of women in leadership. The program inspires to create a pool of vibrant young journalists who consistently engaged in collecting and writing stories about women leadership positions with an analytical eye within and beyond this fellowship. The call targets primarily young women but also include young men who are champions in gender equality. As a pool of young female journalists, the intervention envisions to increase young women movement in the media houses pushing for gender equality mainstreaming

2.0 OBJECTIVES

To motivate journalists and Media Houses to produce more about women untold stories in a bid to achieve gender parity in the political/ leadership sphere. Enhanced is also the ability of journalists in Zanzibar to write analytical and innovative stories about women and other development agendas.

3.0 EXPECTED OUTPUTS

  • Awards granted to qualified media houses and journalists who managed to portrays women’s leadership, gender equality, and violence against women in politics (VAWP).
  • The awards will motivate media houses and journalists in their work through Women’s Leadership
  • The awards will promote innovation and creativity to Journalism and media houses in Zanzibar.
  • The media houses and journalists being efficiency in evidence based regarding data and related information.

4.0 QALIFICATION

To effectively deliver the above results, judges should possess University degree preferably Master in Mass Communication, Journalism, or Media and Public Relations and other equivalent fields.

  • Possess expertise in reviewing feature articles, News analysis, editorial/Commentary, radio and TV production.
  • Experienced in data processing, data presentation as well data analysis.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in and with different teams
  • Possess e-Excellent communication and writing skills in English
  • Self-motivated and managed

5.0 EXPERIENCES

Judge should have possessed not less than five years’ experience of working with media stations such as print media, Radio or Television as well social media.

6.0 ROLES OF JUDGES

  1. Understanding the Zanzibar context especially in women’s Leadership and democratic process.
  2. Read the documents relevant to the project including women participation and democratic process manual, YMFs curriculum etc.
  3. Review the feature articles, stories and program from electronic and printed media (radio, TV and Newspaper) as well social media.
  1. Make visits to media houses to observe the performance and inclusion of women in decision making as their space in the media houses.
  1. Assess how media houses portray gender equality issues through their platforms and the frequency of such coverage.
  1. Monitor the implementation of gender policies, the use of monitoring tools, and the establishment of gender desks within media houses.
  1. Review the articles and programs produced by the Young Media Fellows (YMFs), with a particular focus on social media engagement.
  1. Grade competing journalist and media houses accordingly and share with the team for consensus.
  1. Work closely with your team (other judges) for effective process of winning the award.
  2. Submit the report which explain the whole process to TAMWA- ZNZ.

7.0 TIME FRAME

The judge will be required to work on the assignment between 28th April, – 02nd May 2025, which includes visits, the reviewing processes and report.
