TAMWA is a national level Non-Governmental Organization known as Tanzania Media Women’s Association formed in 1987. TAMWA Zanzibar became fully self-governing and operational in both Isles of Unguja and Pemba since 2004. In January 2007, it attained its own separate registration.

TERMS OF REFERNCES FOR A CONSULTANT TO COORDINATE AND OVERSEE THE DATA JOURNALISM AWARD 2025.

Task Assigned: To coordinate and oversee the Data Journalism Award 2025.

Project Title: Strengthen Women in Leadership (SWIL)

Location: Zanzibar

Date: 03rd March 2025.

1.0 INTRODUCTION ANDBACKGROUND

Tanzania Media Women’s Association is a national level Non-Governmental formed in 1987 dedicated to promote the rights of women and children. TAMWA- Zanzibar became fully fledged office in Unguja and Pemba since 2004 and registered in 2007.

TAMWA-Zanzibar is currently implementing the project titled “Strengthen Women in Leadership (SWIL)” aiming at increasing the participation of women in the democratic processes and leadership at all levels of the society so that women will be regarded as active and vibrant actors in leadership and democratic processes. The project is undertaken in all eleven districts of Zanzibar (seven districts in Unguja and four districts in Pemba). These are Unguja South, North, Urban, West A and West B and Pemba, Wete, Micheweni, Mkoani and Chakechake. The project is implemented in partnership between TAMWA Zanzibar, ZAFELA, JUWAUZA and PEGAO in Pemba with the support from Royal Norwegian Embassy.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

To promote evidence-based journalism by ensuring that professional ethics and standards guiding the journalism profession are consistently upheld across all categories, including print, radio, social media, and television.

2.1 Specific Objectives:

  • Provide strategic and technical support to strengthen the professional growth of participating journalists and enhance the impact of the award initiative.
  • Supervise and guide the Secretariat in planning, organizing, and executing all logistical and programmatic elements related to the award ceremony.
  • Coordinate and follow up on key protocol matters, including confirmation of the Guest of Honor, distribution of official invitations, and ensuring smooth implementation of award presentation procedures.

3.0 EXPECTED OUTPUTS

  • To use different approaches and techniques, support young journalists in advancing their careers in journalism.
  • To motivate journalists in their work through Strengthening Women in Leadership project.
  • To promote innovation and creativity in Journalism in Zanzibar.

4.0 QALIFICATION

To effectively deliver on the above responsibilities, candidates should possess a University Degree, preferably in Mass Communication, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, or other related fields. Prior experience in coordinating journalism awards or similar media events will be considered a strong added advantage.

5.0 EXPERIENCES

The consultant should possess a minimum of five (5) years of experience working with media outlets, including Print, Radio, or Television.

  1. ROLES OF THE CONSULTANT
  1. Understand the Zanzibar context especially in women democratic process.
  2. Read the documents relevant to the project including result framework of the project, women participation and democratic process manual and legal/policy analysis.
  3. Identify and coordinate with an IT expert to prepare and showcase samples of the winning entries during the award ceremony, enabling the audience and the public to understand the core content and impact of the awarded stories.
  4. Identify a suitable Guest of Honour for the award ceremony and conduct follow-up to ensure their availability and participation.
  5. Oversee the preparation of the award information kit—including the brochure, judges’ biographies, and press release—to be finalized and ready at least two weeks before the event.
  6. Support and guide journalists and media to fully understand the objectives and essence of the award, enabling them to deliver impactful and accurate coverage of the ceremony.
  7. Provide strategic guidance on social media and multimedia communications from the date of contract signing until the day of the award event, ensuring consistent visibility and engagement.
  8. Collaborate closely with designated officers to ensure the effective planning and execution of the journalism award.
  9. Submit final report to TAMWA – ZNZ.

7.0 TIME FRAME

The consultant is expected to complete the assignment within the period of 01st April to 25th May 2025.
