TERMS OF REFERENCE TO DEVELOP A CURRICULUM FOR TRAINING JOURNALISTS

Post Title: Consultant

Assignment: Development of Curriculum for training Journalists

Project Title: Zanzibar Women’s Leadership in Adaptation Project (ZanzAdapt)

Location: Zanzibar

  1. BACKGROUND:

Tanzania Media Women’s Association is a national Non-Governmental Organization founded in 1987 and dedicated to working towards promotion of the rights of women and children in Zanzibar. TAMWA -Zanzibar became fully fledged office in 2004 and was reregistered in 2007.

Currently, TAMWA ZNZ in collaboration with Community Forest International (CFI) and Community Forest Pemba (CFP) is implementing the Zanzibar Women’s Leadership in Adaptation Project (ZanzAdapt ) the project will improve gender equality and nature-based climate adaptation capacity in vulnerable coastal communities on Pemba and Unguja Islands, Zanzibar. Project outputs will primarily benefit women and their households and communities through regenerative livelihood actions that increase ecological, social, and economic resilience to climate change.

2.0: OBJECTIVE:

To strengthen the capacity of 30 journalists to produce accurate and compelling in-depth and journalism on women’s leadership and climate change adaptation that informs and engages the public about the actual situation of climate change adaptation in Zanzibar.

3.0: EXPECTED OUTPUT:

A comprehensive curriculum for journalists training that will guide users to perfectly report women leadership in climate change adaptation.

4.0: RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CONSULTANT:

Consultant will specifically perform the following tasks;

  1. Review related documents on the subject including project document and media gap analysis on women’s equality and leadership of nature-based climate adaptation in Zanzibar.
  2. Prepare the inception report and share it with stakeholders for more inputs.
  3. Develop a curriculum that will lead to generation of quality stories about women leadership in nature – based climate change adaptation and approaches thereto.
  4. Mindful of the media gap analysis, propose components/ criterions indispensable for journalists to look into while covering stories on women leadership in the nature based climate change adaptation.
  1. Share the draft document during the validation meeting and accommodate changes resulting from the discussions and deliberations.
  2. Incorporate recommendations from the validation meeting and produce the final document.
  3. Work closely with TAMWA-ZNZ and Community Forest Pemba (CFP) responsible officers for better performance of the assignment.

5.0: QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

The incumbent will have to possess:

  • University degree (at least Master’s level) in Mass Communication, Gender and Community Development, Policy Analysis, or equivalent.
  • Expertise in journalism and related fields.
  • Have a good understanding of the journalism landscape in Zanzibar.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with TAMWA’s programming and processes.
  • Ability to work with teams.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Ability to deliver on time and work under pressure.

6.0: EXPERIENCE:

Consultant should have not less than five years’ experience in journalism, Public Relations, Public Administration as well conversant with Zanzibar social context and dynamics. Multidiscipline experience within development organizations and NGOs is highly desirous.

7.0: TIMEFRAME:

The work will be undertaken for eight days between 21st –28th, September 2024.

A comprehensive guideline for community members that will guide users to perfectly approach community members on engaging with media to create awareness and interaction with journalists to get full access to information.

4.0: RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CONSULTANT:

The work will be undertaken for eight days from the 23rd to the 28th of September 2024.
